Bocce . . . Americans Newest Team Sport
What do you think of when you hear the word "bocce"? Little old Italian men
tossing balls on a dusty court? For years, bocce was considered the game of Italian immigrants. Today, it has become
one of the country's newest team sports, it is now a part of the World Corporate Games and is an event in the Special Olympics. In other
words, bocce is coming to town !
Bocce may be America's newest sport, but it is one of the world's oldest games. Over the ages, bocce has changed
from a crude sport played with round rocks, or even coconuts, to today's game with composite or metal balls. Bocce
also has had many names: " lawn bowling", "nine pins", "skittles" and
"pentaque", to name a few, and has been played by many rules.
The USAbocce.com goals are to bring bocce to a higher level of professional participation by seeking out U.S. bocce tournaments
and to connect US leagues for men and women. Bocce is a great game for people who cannot participate in strenuous
physical activity, but who like a game with a high intensity level. Bocce players don't need the size or strength that
is so important in other sports..
Bocce is a competitive sport, dating all the way back to the Roman Empire, which requires
great skills. A game that is not as old but at least equally competitive is the online craps. There are quite
a few good online casinos where you can hang out when you need some time away from the bocce court.
Further to the above if you're from the United States it's highly recommended that you play at recommended US online
casinos which offer you the best online casino games, bonuses and much more to choose from and take advantage of.
Today, it has become one of the country's newest team sports, it is now a part of the World Corporate Games
and is an event in the Special Olympics. In other words, bocce is coming to town ! Just like the
bingo game
Bocce evolved from being popular to vanishing completely into the background and coming back. When comparing
to bingo it's obvious that some rooms like USA bingo
are doing great!

2009 Pat O'Brien Chevrolet Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce
Wickliffe Italian-American Club
by David Mitchell
The Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce was originated in 1984 by the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (NIASHF).
The NIASHF through its spokesman, Tommy Lasorda, a longtime manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, developed the tournament as a means
to promote the Italian heritage. The Wickliffe Italian-American Club began hosting the Cleveland Challenge Cup in 1989,
adding continuity and strengthening the rich tradition of the game of Bocce. This year, the tournament was held from August 28th to 30th.
The Wickliffe I & A Club serves as an outstanding facility for conducting a Bocce tournament. The club members willingly
contribute countless hours to make sure all local and out of town players have an enjoyable and competitive tournament
experience. Club president and tournament director, Gino Latessa, said that this year's three day event attracted 12,000 people.
An unprecedented, 92 competing bocce teams from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Florida and Canada
attended the largest Bocce tournament in the Midwest.
Club member Tony Continenza, to whom Latessa attributes a lot of the tournament's success, was proud to see his vision
continue to thrive. "When I first joined the club, I saw the potential the tournament had.
I proposed ideas about adding vendors, sponsorship, entertainment and making it more of an Italian festival, expanding
on the Italian heritage a lot more."- said Tony Continenza. " This year, we had two brothers, a 12- and
14-year-old, playing ... and our oldest player is 82 ! The generations continue throughout the years ... keeping that tradition going."
Latessa echoed Continenza's sentiments and also thanked committee member Paul DiCicco. "We've created a family atmosphere
with entertainment, food vendors and activities for the kids." - he said. Festivities included an Italian band Friday,
a classic rock band Saturday, a live broadcast with an Italian radio station Sunday, and an Italian Cultural Exhibition,
cooking demonstrations and a wine-making workshop.
The top 16 teams received cash prizes totaling $15,000, with the first place team, Maxxy Valley 777 from Toronto Canada,
taking $5,000. The club also hosted its second annual cornhole tournament, featuring 64 two-man teams competing for $1,600
in prize money, which ran simultaneous to the bocce tournament.

The Ellwood City Arts, Crafts and Food Festival is an event held annually in
beautiful Ewing Park in Ellwood City, PA. Usually spanning a three day period during the 4th of July holiday, the festival
also plays host to a major Bocce tournament.
Typically 25-30 four-person teams participate in the tournament.
Included in this year's tournament were teams representing
Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.
At this year's tournament, to my surprise, I watched a dozen or so young people practicing on the courts, after the tournament
had ended. I soon discovered that they conduct another tournament the following day at the same Bocce facility. This
year they held their 4th Annual post 4th of July Youth Tournament.
These young guys and gals take the game seriously. The entry fee is $10 per player. They start off with a round
robin two-person team, then seed each team into a double elimination tournament - winners take all. I would imagine
these kids range in age between 12 and 16 years old. They played basically a smart game by calling every shot and knowing
when to hit and when to lay in a bocce shot.
The only difference between the novices and the tournament regulars - was their mode of transportation. Instead of
arriving by automobile, they arrived via scooters and bicycles. I would like to commend Matt Morella who started this
Post 4th of July Youth Tournament 4-years ago. I hope many more young players read this article and continue learning,
playing and growing to the popularity of Bocce.
