Senator John Heinz History Center’s Second Annual Bocce Tournament and Festival

Joe Palumbo, Gene Giotto, History Center President & CEO Andy Masich, Jim Sacco and Tom Giotto
More than 1,500 spectators enjoyed the Senator John Heinz History Center’s Second Annual
Bocce Tournament and Festival on Sat., Aug. 20, in the Strip District.
Visitors indulged in Italian food provided by The Common Plea and danced to Italian-themed music from Pure Gold, Vito DiSalvo & Daniella Pasquini, and
Jimmy Sapienza’s Five Guys Named Moe throughout the day. Nearly 30 bocce teams competed against each other on specially constructed bocce courts to raise funds
and awareness for the History Center’s Italian American Endowed Fund, which is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Italian Americans in Western
Pennsylvania. The bocce squad from the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC took the first place prize, while W.G. Tomko battled to a second-place
finish. All prize winnings totaling $10,000 were generously donated back to the History Center.

Bocce . . .
Americans Newest Team Sport
What do you think of when you hear the
word "bocce"? Little old Italian men tossing balls on a dusty court?
For years, bocce was considered the game of Italian immigrants. Today,
it has become one of the country's newest team sports, it is now a
part of the World Corporate Games and is an event in the Special
Olympics. In other words, bocce is coming to town !
Bocce may be America's newest sport, but it is one of the world's
oldest games. Over the ages, bocce has changed from a crude
sport played with round rocks, or even coconuts, to today's game with
composite or metal balls. Bocce also has had many names: "
lawn bowling", "nine pins", "skittles"
and "pentaque", to name a few, and has been played by
many rules.
The USAbocce.com goals are to bring bocce to a higher level of
professional participation by seeking out U.S. bocce tournaments and
to connect US leagues for men and women. Bocce is a great game for
people who cannot participate in strenuous physical activity, but who
like a game with a high intensity level. Bocce players don't need the
size or strength that is so important in other sports..

" A YOUNGER GENERATION TAKES UP BOCCE"
by David Mitchell

The Ellwood City Arts, Crafts and Food Festival is an event
held annually in beautiful Ewing Park in Ellwood City, PA. Usually
spanning a three day period during the 4th of July holiday, the
festival also plays host to a major Bocce tournament.
|
Typically 25-30 four-person teams participate in the tournament.
Included in this year's tournament were teams representing Western
Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.
At this year's tournament, to my surprise, I watched a dozen or so
young people practicing on the courts, after the tournament had ended.
I soon discovered that they conduct another tournament the following
day at the same Bocce facility. This year they held their 4th
Annual post 4th of July Youth Tournament.
These young guys and gals take the game seriously. The entry fee
is $10 per player. They start off with a round robin two-person
team, then seed each team into a double elimination tournament -
winners take all. I would imagine these kids range in age
between 12 and 16 years old. They played basically a smart game
by calling every shot and knowing when to hit and when to lay in a
bocce shot.
The only difference between the novices and the tournament regulars -
was their mode of transportation. Instead of arriving by
automobile, they arrived via scooters and bicycles. I would like
to commend Matt Morella who started this Post 4th of July Youth
Tournament 4-years ago. I hope many more young players read this
article and continue learning, playing and growing to the popularity
of Bocce.
